Tired of Mess and Spills, Couple Create the Perfect Cup Holder

John and Lori Angran, from Albany, Illinois developed the “Combo Caddy” out of necessity. “We travel a lot with our two children and most of the time we were eating on the road.  We were really tired of the mess in the back and the spilled drinks," said John.

"The cup holders in the car were too small and my wife was always balancing drinks between her knees, while trying to help the kids with their snacks or fast food meal.” They tried just about every product they knew of in search of something to help them stay better organized on the road.  Yet none of the existing car cup holder/organizers really worked.

Determined to come up with a solution, they sat at the kitchen table and came up with an idea for a cup holder to make their vehicle travel easier.  They knew what they wanted and they knew what current cup holder/ organizers didn’t offer them.  They wanted something compact, not too big and bulky.  They also wanted it to be able to handle different sized cups, particularly as John favors the big 32- ounce mug with a handle.  They wanted adjustability, and it had to be able to hold a fast food meal!  Whew!  Long into the night they worked, making the first proto type out of cardboard.  In 2002, the “Combo Caddy” came to market.

“We really committed to this product development, says John, we really believed in it and saw the need.  We tried to think of everything.  Because it started as an idea for ourselves as consumers, we incorporated all the things we would want- what we envisioned as the ‘perfect cup-holder’ As Lori will tell you, “When you’re busy and traveling, the reality is that you do end up stopping for fast food and refreshments. The four year old needed her juice cup; my 13-year-old boy was starving and couldn’t last another second!  The Combo Caddy holds their snacks and beverages, eliminating chaos in the car. If your driving alone with kids in the back, it allows you to focus on the road, not spilled drinks in the back.  It provides a secure spot for beverages, eliminating holding drinks between the legs or balancing coffee mugs on the dash.  It also is great for many working people who like the convenience of stopping at a Fast Food Restaurant, but prefer to eat in their cars.”

In addition, it was important to John and Lori that the Combo Caddy to be versatile so it could be used in a variety of ways.  They thought of everything. For example, it can be used as a compact single cup holder or expand to a dual cup holder and accommodate all the different sized cups and containers being offered today.

While serving as a cup holder, it can also serve as an organizer for items such as tissue box, cell phone, palm pilot and sunglasses.  Finally, it can serve as a whole fast food meal holder, including a tray for condiments.  They incorporated all these things into one product using patented technology, which allows the Combo Caddy to adjust to four positions.

The final product is one that shows the care and commitment they have given to designing a cup holder that really works for people like themselves who travel and find the current cup holders and organizers really inadequate.  They took care to consider factors really important to people such as size, vehicle compatibility, durability, stability, and ease of use. 

John believes they have succeeded in filling this need. “ It seems like a simple thing but car cup holders are a really important item to consumers and people are not happy with them.  We believe the Combo Caddy will be the perfect solution for them.”
